The craft brewing industry in Iowa is experiencing exponential growth. In fact, according to the national Brewer’s Association, the number of craft breweries in the state grew by 181% from 2011-2017. While that growth is great for the state’s economy, the brewing of beer is a very resource intensive process and has a number of potential environmental implications.
One of the fastest growing breweries in the United States is actually located right here in Iowa. Keg Creek Brewing Company in Glenwood was named one of the 50 fastest growing breweries nationwide by CraftBeer.com. During Keg Creek’s expansion last year, the Iowa Waste Reduction Center’s Iowa Green Brewery Certification worked with the company to identify process inefficiencies, conservation techniques and waste diversion measures for the brewery to increase their efficiency and lessen their environmental footprint, ultimately saving them money.
The IWRC also provided assistance to the brewery with complying with several environmental regulations applicable to them.
