The UNI Center for Business Growth and Innovation has just expanded their staff with the addition of two new hires, two recent graduates from the University of Northern Iowa. I sat down with Sarah Diercks and Cally Reed to find out more about them and their roles at CBGI.

Sarah Diercks, Program Associate

What will your role be at CBGI? Tell us a little bit about what you’ll be doing!

As a Program Associate at the CBGI, I will be working with Business Concierge by helping small businesses with industry research, prospect lists, demographic and consumer spending data and information on funding opportunities. In addition, I will gather and analyze program impact results, assist with the creation and management of social media, and assist with the coordination of small business and entrepreneurial events.

What was your school, major, and what year did you graduate?

I graduated from UNI in 2016 with a degree in both Management and Marketing.

Tell us a little bit about yourself!

I was born and raised in Denver, IA and I recently graduated from UNI. In December I began working at the CBGI. Previously, I worked part-time in Quality Engineering at John Deere where I ran and created reports in Excel to ensure parts would meet the correct specifications. I love traveling and finding new things to do outdoors. I recently got back from a long weekend of skiing in Utah, which I try to do once a year somewhere out West. I have vacationed in or driven through 28 states so far and hope to make it to all 50 at some point in my life.

Cally Reed, Program Associate

What will your role be at CBGI? Tell us a little bit about what you’ll be doing!

Through my experience as a student at UNI, I developed a passion for encouraging and championing the strengths of individuals and teams in Iowa. I share the Center for Business Growth and Innovation’s vision of bettering the communities of Iowa, through listening to small business owners, imagining what we can do to make life better, and creating reliable solutions that leverage our university and technology assets.

What was your school, major, and what year did you graduate?

I earned my bachelor’s degree from UNI, where I studied Communication and graduated in the spring of 2016.

Tell us a little bit about yourself!

I love exploring other countries to meet new people and to experience different cultures. But I'm also all about the local scene--wherever “local” may be that day. That means I like to spend time with people at all the local Sidecar Coffee Shops---er, I mean ALL the shops in downtown Waterloo and Cedar Falls, perusing the library’s bookshelves, and participating in local events like the College Hill Arts Festival, My Waterloo Days, and exploring the Summer Farmer’s Market. So if you know of a hidden gem of something to “see-and-do” in the Cedar Valley, I’d love to hear about it!
